Before we get down to the importance of having a strong English Vocabulary repository, it is essential for us to know the 3 categories of questions under the Verbal Reasoning module:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), developed and administered by ETS, is a standardized English test recognized by 13,000+ educational institutions across 160+ countries. Let's look at the Three-Tier Vocabulary Model developed by Isabel Beck, Margaret McKeown, and Linda Kucan, which categorizes words based on their frequency, utility, and domain-specificity.

• Tier 1: High-frequency conversational words acquired naturally; rarely requires explicit instruction. These are CEFR A1-A2-B1 Proficiency level words.
• Tier 2: Cross-disciplinary words appearing frequently in the news, academic textbooks, lectures, essays, and class discussions. These are CEFR B2-C1 and some C2 Proficiency level words.
• Tier 3: Low-frequency terms restricted to specific academic domains. Tier 3 words are usually defined directly in the reading passages and audio, and so TOEFL takers need not put in the effort to learn them.

Mastering Tier 2 vocabulary offers the highest return on study time as it forms the syntactic scaffolding required to understand questions, reading passages faster and articulating your thoughts more effectively. Let's also look at other forms of the same root --> "Unsubstantiated" which can be used as "His claims remain unsubstantiated".

India's UPSC Civil Services Exams among the toughest examinations to clear with a success rate of 0.2% - 0.4%. Besides being a grueling three stage elimination process - Preliminary, Mains and Personality Test, what makes it tough is that aspirants are expected to have well rounded knowledge on a wide spectrum of subjects - Indian constitution, polity, science, history, civics, geography, economy, ethics, law, and current affairs. Candidates can write the descriptive answers in the UPSC Mains in English, Hindi, or any language listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Question papers are printed in both English and Hindi. Likewise, for the UPSC Personality Test, candidates can choose to speak in languages other than English. 

Moreover, papers are not graded on literary language quality. Factual accuracy, relevance, clarity and structure of content over prose are important parameters. So why is it that I am laying emphasis on having a strong command of English?

Historically, more than 90% of the half a million exam takers write their answers in English. Final selections and recommendations remain heavily skewed toward English-medium candidates. But these are not the reasons why I am penning this blog. 

I went through these six papers of UPSC Mains of 2025 (Essay, General Studies Paper 1, General Studies Paper 2, General Studies Paper 3, General Studies Paper 4, and Compulsory English Language Paper)  and mapped out how improved English proficiency by expanding your active English Vocabulary can improve your chances of acing these exams (if you are taking these exams in English):

The UPSC Essay paper demands multi-dimensionality (thinking from multiple perspectives),depth, nuance, and structural flow, where the right vocabulary enables you to articulate your thoughts with confidence and transform generic ideas into compelling arguments. • Learners practice vocabulary in authentic contexts, and material is repeated over dynamic intervals to increase retention — approaches that are known to be effective in helping learners become confident speakers. Users are given a topic e.g. "Recommend how to get into shape" and are asked to use words  "exercise," "heart," and "tired" in their response. This interactive element creates a more dynamic learning process by simulating real conversations.
  
• Speech responses are recorded and analyzed to provide the following personalized feedback: Semantic feedback, indicating whether their response was relevant to the question and may be understood by a conversation partner. Grammar feedback provides insights into possible grammatical improvements, and a set of example answers at varying levels of language complexity give concrete suggestions for alternative ways to respond in this context.

Think GenAI, and the first thing to strike your mind would be coming up with the right prompt to input into tools of your choice, be it ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude etc. It has been observed that younger netizens today are increasingly using them to seek information instead of using search engines like Google or Bing.

Here are some examples of prompts for English Vocabulary building and practice:

"Give me 5 useful C1 CEFR level business English vocabulary words that I can use for negotiations with simple definitions and example sentences."

You can turn word lists into memorable stories for you to remember by prompting: 

"Come up with an entertaining story using all of these words: [insert your words here]."

For speaking practice based on role plays, consider prompts like:

GenAI tools are excellent when it comes to English speaking practice, and particularly helpful if learners do not have a speaking partner. So why not have a counter question - "Why use and pay for AI-powered speaking practice mobile apps that abound the ELT market, when I can practice on ChatGPT?"

It is my studied option that when one's vocabulary is limited, no amount of speaking to an AI Speech app would help, unless the app actively integrates new vocabulary as part of the interaction.

Back in the era before AI was powering everything, whenever we would read a book, a newspaper, a magazine, an online news article and even watch videos to improve our English, we would jot down (in a physical notebook, mobile notes, Word document or mentally) the new words and phrases we came across. We'd then refer a physical or online Dictionary or just Google them to know their meaning and how they were used. These meanings and usage examples would then be jotted down.

For you to make the most of Google Search and GenAI tools, you'd have to manually key in the word (or phrase) first for both to generate lexical outputs followed by practice engagements. 

For GenAI tools to be effectively used, there's significant dependence on also manually keying in a properly structured prompt for achieving optimum results.

For millennials like me, as well as for the generation of people born before the 80's who were keen to improve their proficiency in English, the Oxford English Dictionary was our go-to resource if we did not know the meaning of a word while reading a book or an English daily newspaper that would be a staple diet for our minds. 

All this at a time when we had no smartphones and neither the internet.

To pass time or to even enrich our minds, we'd rack our brains trying to solve the Crossword puzzle or even play the board game Scrabble if we had friends or relatives over. The blue covered Oxford dictionary was that ally we could bank on whenever we found ourselves stuck while engaging in such activities. Voila! We'd even discover a new word or two in the process.

Post the turn of the century, we saw the Dictionary evolve into its online avatar.
