Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), developed and administered by ETS, is a standardized English test recognized by 13,000+ educational institutions across 160+ countries. Let's look at the Three-Tier Vocabulary Model developed by Isabel Beck, Margaret McKeown, and Linda Kucan, which categorizes words based on their frequency, utility, and domain-specificity.

• Tier 1: High-frequency conversational words acquired naturally; rarely requires explicit instruction. These are CEFR A1-A2-B1 Proficiency level words.
• Tier 2: Cross-disciplinary words appearing frequently in the news, academic textbooks, lectures, essays, and class discussions. These are CEFR B2-C1 and some C2 Proficiency level words.
• Tier 3: Low-frequency terms restricted to specific academic domains. Tier 3 words are usually defined directly in the reading passages and audio, and so TOEFL takers need not put in the effort to learn them.

Mastering Tier 2 vocabulary offers the highest return on study time as it forms the syntactic scaffolding required to understand questions, reading passages faster and articulating your thoughts more effectively. Replacing Tier 1 phrasing with Tier 2 usage of English words and phrases in the writing and speaking modules can shift your TOEFL score from an intermediate band (3.5 - 4.5) to advanced (4.5 - 6.0) as automated scoring engines measure lexical range and syntactic variety.

This module requires you to develop decoding speed and lexical precision. Direct vocabulary-in-context questions test whether you are able to recognize nuanced shades of meaning of words rather than their literal definitions.

In the 'Complete the Words' tasks, you are given sentences with missing letters and need to complete them by filling in the blanks. Your familiarity with root words, prefixes, and suffixes can be of help. In the Academic Passage and Read in Daily Life tasks, your familiarity with Tier 2 words and phrases will improve your reading speed and comprehension to answer the questions. 

A strong command of English Vocabulary helps you eliminate audio processing time and comprehension latency in this module. 

Audio tracks in the Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Academic Talk, and Listen to an Announcement play once at standard university lecture speed of ~150–180 words per minute in an American accent. Knowledge of English Vocabulary (not just words but also American English idioms and phrasal verbs) and how they are enunciated with an American accent would mitigate losing time in mentally translating new words and losing track of the following sentences.

Having a larger repository of Tier 2 vocabulary in terms of words and functional collocations, idioms and phrasal verbs helps you ace the Simulated Interview section with fluid delivery under the pressure of time. You'd be able to articulate your thoughts more succinctly and effectively. 

Lexical resource and syntactic automaticity is what the speaking section rewards. Long pauses, usage of filler words (err.. uhmm..) and repetition of words lead to points being docked. Practice of contextually using the right words and phrases will help you overcome these challenges in this module.

Clarity and appropriateness of written communication is what gets tested in this module. In Write an Email task, knowing the exact lexical conventions will help. It is in Write for an Academic Discussion, where you have to state and defend a your position on a topic convincingly, where the importance of a strong English Vocabulary gets emphasized.

This is the module where word variety, correct prepositional pairings, and avoidance of overly generic terms get assessed.

As a TOEFL aspirant, you may be resorting to flash cards or memorizing word lists which may work for some, but largely tends to fail in real-time test constraints. At Glibzter, we would recommend this 3 pronged strategy for functional vocabulary acquisition and mastery:

Remember words in word clusters and not by individual meanings: You come across a word "substantiate". You refer to the dictionary or Google it to get its meaning - "give evidence or provide information to prove that something is true", and try committing it to memory. A better way to retain its contextual usage is to remember how it is used is to make a note of word cluster usage anchoring such as - "substantiate your claim", "substantiated it with evidence", "couldn't substantiate his point" etc.

Word flexibility: You may have encountered the word "substantiate" as a verb. Explore if it can it be used as any other part of speech? 'Substantiation by providing evidence' (used as a noun form) --> 'The substantiated claims were presented in the court of law' (used as an adjective form). Let's also look at other forms of the same root --> "Unsubstantiated" which can be used as "His claims remain unsubstantiated".
