India's UPSC Civil Services Exams among the toughest examinations to clear with a success rate of 0.2% - 0.4%. Besides being a grueling three stage elimination process - Preliminary, Mains and Personality Test, what makes it tough is that aspirants are expected to have well rounded knowledge on a wide spectrum of subjects - Indian constitution, polity, science, history, civics, geography, economy, ethics, law, and current affairs. While there are study guides and recommended reference books, it requires daily reading of the news to stay abreast, followed by deep dives on topics to map out developments in the past to correlate them to the present. 

Candidates can write the descriptive answers in the UPSC Mains in English, Hindi, or any language listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Question papers are printed in both English and Hindi. Likewise, for the UPSC Personality Test, candidates can choose to speak in languages other than English. 

Moreover, papers are not graded on literary language quality. Factual accuracy, relevance, clarity and structure of content over prose are important parameters. So why is it that I am laying emphasis on having a strong command of English?

Historically, more than 90% of the half a million exam takers write their answers in English. Final selections and recommendations remain heavily skewed toward English-medium candidates. But these are not the reasons why I am penning this blog. 

I went through these six papers of UPSC Mains of 2025 (Essay, General Studies Paper 1, General Studies Paper 2, General Studies Paper 3, General Studies Paper 4, and Compulsory English Language Paper)  and mapped out how improved English proficiency by expanding your active English Vocabulary can improve your chances of acing these exams (if you are taking these exams in English):

The UPSC Essay paper demands multi-dimensionality (thinking from multiple perspectives),depth, nuance, and structural flow, where the right vocabulary enables you to articulate your thoughts with confidence and transform generic ideas into compelling arguments. A rich lexicon ensures smooth transitions between multidimensional viewpoints and elevates an essay from a factual catalogue to an intellectually engaging read that holds the examiner's interest.

UPSC GS Paper 1 entails articulation of your knowledge in Indian society, history and cultural heritage; geography and world history. Writing about intricate cultural currents, and delicate social dynamics, requires accurate descriptive vocabulary without wasting word counts. UPSC GS Paper 2 requires the disciplined language of administrative jurisprudence, institutional mechanisms, and diplomatic nuance. A robust vocabulary ensures the seamless integration of constitutional doctrine, legislative terminology, and international relations jargon into crisp arguments conveying complex legal and political realities in a single phrase. Clear, precise diction demonstrates administrative maturity and an objective, policy-oriented mindset.

UPSC GS Paper 3 is data-heavy and techno-economic in nature, requiring exact vocabulary to explain modern scientific trends and policy frameworks. It evaluates candidates on economic development, agriculture, environment, science and technology, disaster management, and internal security. High vocabulary density ensures technical assessments remain sharp, professional, and grounded in current affairs, while writing descriptive answers under strict time constraints. 

UPSC GS Paper 4 tests moral reasoning and emotional intelligence, making standard everyday vocabulary insufficient to explain complex ethical dilemmas. Mastery of ethical terms gives you the exact toolkit needed to dissect case studies. It prevents responses from sounding like generic moral preaching, anchoring them instead in established philosophical and administrative constructs.

While the standard of questions may be equivalent to the Matriculation (10th grade) level, having a strong English vocabulary would help differentiate your paper from the rest. The merits outlined in the Essay paper apply to this paper as well. Having a broad active vocabulary pool helps you decode the essence of the reading comprehension and precis writing passages faster, and gives you the requisite verbal elasticity and precision to write the answers.
